Women More Likely to Have an Auto-Immune Disease
Women are more likely to have an incidence and prevalence of autoimmune diseases than men. Of those women who have an autoimmune disease, 85% of them are likely to have multiple autoimmune diseases. Estrogen is most likely the cause for the development of autoimmune disease in women.
Autoimmune diseases are conditions that make your immunes system attack your body by mistake. When your body is attacked by external agents such as bacteria or viruses your body is supposed to recognize whether it is foreign or your own before attacking the intruder. In the case of individuals with autoimmune disease, the body cannot distinguish this and starts to attack its own body. That said, for those with autoimmune disease, the immune system will think that the skin, joints, or other parts of your body are actually a foreign entity.
